Meet Kelli!  She is a 4 year old, 50lb yellow lab that was surrendered by her owners after they could no longer care for her.

Personality: Kelli is a total sweetheart who loves people and gets along well with other animals. She’s a friendly, easygoing girl who would love to be part of a family where she can share her affection and be included in the fun.  All she wants is to be loved and cuddled.  She is a bit of a Velcro dog, and she is happiest when she is burrowed up next to her humans.

Training: Kelli appears to be house-trained but has had accidents due to her UTI and heartworm treatment.  She knows some basic commands as well. She’s dog-friendly, cat-friendly, and people-friendly, making her a well-rounded companion who’s ready to settle into her new home.

Medical: Kelli’s heartworm positive and has started her treatment. She received her injection for heart worm on September 30th, so will be due for repeat testing 30 days after that.  She will need to restrict exercise for the next few weeks as she recovers.  CLR will cover the cost of care.  She is also currently being treated for a UTI, which she is tolerating well without any GI side effects.

Updates

Kelli is, without a doubt, the best cuddler of all time.
Housetraining:  Kelli had a UTI so she had some accidents.  She has gotten so much better with treatment! She has never intentionally peed  in the house – it’s more that she gets excited or scared and pees. She has now has mastered going outside, so I just take her out frequently and she has done great.
Anxiety: Understandably, poor girl has some separation anxiety. She got a prescription for trazodone from the vet, and it has made a HUGE difference in helping her anxiety and keeping her calm, especially with the exercise restrictions. When left alone in the crate, she does tend to bark/cry intermittently. She does best if she’s in the 3-4 window after getting trazodone. I’ve been leaving her alone in the house for 1-2 hours at a time with cameras to make sure she doesn’t do anything crazy, and she basically just sleeps the entire time. That being said, I’ve been crating her at least once a day as well to help her try to get used to it in case her furever family plans to use a crate!
Sleep: She sleeps like a champ – only wakes up when I wake up.
Food: Like a true lab, she loves her breakfast and dinner, but actually is somewhat picky with treats (which SHOCKED me) and didn’t want some apples that fell on the floor. She will try to nab things if left in front of her, but honestly is way less food-obsessed than the labs I grew up with. I can actually eat on the couch with her without worrying she’s going to tackle me for it.
Walking: She’s definitely a “stop and smell the roses” kind of gal, which is fine given the heart worm! We’re working on not criss-crossing when we walk and we do pull sometimes, but she does quite well with a prong collar to support her.
