Meet Darnel! He is a 2 year old, 80lb yellow lab that was surrendered by his owner. He was purchased for breeding and ultimately passed home to home after his owner could no longer care for him.
Medical disclosure: Darnel is available for adoption, but he is on a medical journey. He is heartworm positive and has begun his 90 day treatment plan. He also underwent X-rays, and we discovered bilateral femoral deformity in his hind end. It is believed that he broke his leg as a puppy, and it healed incorrectly after going untreated. He will have a Femoral Head Ostectomy (FHO) in February. The surgery will give Darnel the best chance at a normal, pain free life. He must complete his heartworm treatment prior to having surgery. CLR will be responsible for the cost of care and will partner with the adopter throughout his medical journey.
Personality: Darnel is an incredibly kind soul with a heart full of love. He has a calm, sweet temperament and is a total love bug! He is craves human interaction and is always ready to share affectionate doggie kisses. He is great with humans of all sizes (including children). He also does great with other dogs! Darnel is full of love but can be a little shy at first. He is quick to warm up and will give you the best wiggle butt. He is such a happy boy!
Training: Darnel is housetrained but has hasn’t had much training and is still learning the basics. He is still learning leash manners, and he likely was not walked prior to arriving rescue. With a bit of practice, Darnel will gain confidence and become a walking partner and adventure buddy.
Darnel is the best boy with the best temperament! He would make a great addition to any family!
Updates
Darnel has been in foster for a week, and it has been amazing to see his progress! He arrived very unsure and fearful but wanted so much to love and trust humans. Over the course of a day or two, he began to come alive and show his amazing personality. He is SOOOOOO sweet and affectionate! He is a total snuggle bug and loves to be loved. He has done great with humans big and small. He also has melted seamlessly into my pack….he loves other dogs. He is just a lovable boy!
As for training, we are working on some of the basics. He is housetrained but has had a few accidents (mainly due to his medications). He isn’t a big fan of the crate but has proven himself trustworthy uncrated. He doesn’t know any commands but he is very treat motivated.
Darnel is a playful guy. He loves toys and will often parade around the house with them. He also discovered bones as well.
He has been such an amazing houseguest and we can’t wait to see him blossom as he settles in!
